There are so many jobs listed online seeking in-house writers these days, and far too many of them do not think to consult with a contract writer or writer-for-hire. To write under a contract means that you are being hired by a company to write something on their behalf, and in most cases receive a credit and either a substantial advance or flat fee for your services. These contracts can cover just one project, or several projects for many years.
Ghost-writing can cover books, articles, stories, reports, etc.; documents which are officially credited to another person. Celebrities, executives, and political leaders often hire ghostwriters to draft or edit autobiographies, magazine articles, or other written material. You'll also find them for classical music, film composition, and other forms of popular art and media. The ghostwriter is sometimes acknowledged by the author or publisher for their assistance but, as a rule, does not share in the overall profits or credits.
