Scribes Unlimited's E-Library
About the E-Library Project:
One of Scribes Unlimited's ongoing challenges is to introduce new authors and their works to interested readers everywhere. To this end, our e-library will strive to meet this challenge, with new and exciting works of fiction and non-fiction from people just like you available through e-book formats. Unlike non-electronic publishing houses, our criteria is broader and less concerned about the viability of a proposed work, and more concerned about giving authors a chance to publish, and reap some rewards from doing so. We are always looking for interesting fiction of any genre (no pornography, please), and informative how-to and self-helps. We have been writing a long time, and we are excited about the prospect of showcasing the remarkable talent that is out there.
Instructions for Submissions:
To submit an e-book to us, it is worth your time and effort to follow a few simple guidelines. First off, query us by email through our submissions department at submissions@scribesunlimited.com, describing what you wish to send to us. Think of this e-library as you would any other normal publishing house. You send them a query letter, telling them a little bit about your story, and how they can get in touch with you. If they are satisfied with the query letter, that will usually clear the way for you to submit sample chapters and a synopsis. So please treat us the same way; we want to maintain a certain air of professionalism and gain the respect of everyone with whom we associate. If we like what we see of your query, we will contact you very soon about it.
If you receive a favorable reply regarding your query, and we like what we see in your sample chapters or synopsis, you may send your e-book to us. We ask that all full-manuscript submissions be sent on a standard 3.5 floppy diskette or CD, and mailed to us. We want to do this for a few reasons. First, we want to protect your work. It is so much safer to keep a diskette or CD safe in our storage, instead of as a file on our systems where it can be easily corrupted or lost. If your e-book is special to you, it's special to us. We also want to limit the possibility of piracy, which is why we plan to password-protect the e-books we receive. And think about it; if we accepted e-mail submissions, and going on the theory that most books are between 250-500K in length each, a massive influx of emails would overload us. (and probably cheese off Adelphia) ;-) We are very serious about what we are doing here and therefore feel that you, as a writer, should also be serious. If you take the time to follow our guidelines, then you deserve to be taken seriously. If you send a quick e-mail with your book saying, "Here, read this!" chances are we will trash the email message, and you will have to start over again.
A few more notes about requirements -- we ask that all submissions (if you are sending more than one) be on a separate disk or CD. No mutliple submissions are allowed; it's too difficult to keep track. All submissions should be in Microsoft Word, Wordperfect, or another popular word processing program. If you really want to make our day, you can send your e-book in an Adobe Acrobat PDF format. This is the most acceptable, and the easiest for us, since all of our e-books will eventually go into PDF format with password protection. Keep in mind that all submissions will be read by us before publishing onto our site, so make sure your work is edited properly and thoroughly. Remember that your e-book is going to be a salable product. Please strive to give us the best you can.
What we look for and publish:
While a lot of publishing houses tell you exactly what they are looking for, and nitpick about certain genres or content, Scribes Unlimited's E-library is a little more carefree. We do not really have a set standard on genre. We accept just about any form of fiction or non-fiction. But there are a few areas that we do concern ourselves with. Straight porn or trash-books will not be accepted, nor will subjects that we feel could offend the majority of our readers, such as books that glorify racism, terrorism, etc. Give us originality and creativity, but do it in good taste.
Our payment system:
Being paid for your work is what most writers in the business want. Being paid per-sale of your book makes things all the more interesting. Scribes Unlimited's E-library adheres to the notion that those who strive for success should earn the proper rewards for their efforts. You receive 75% of the revenues generated per book sold. The other 25% comes to Scribes Unlimited to cover storage and protection of your work, Paypal fees, and advertising and promotional costs to get your book popular and well-read. We might not be able to be your agent and market your book to publishing houses, but we can help market your book to the rest of the world!
Authors have the choice over how much to charge for their book. This is an intersting feature of Scribes Unlimited's E-library, and by doing this we allow our writers to decide how valuable their work is. For instance, a fiction novel will perhaps sell for $3.50, while a how-to book about building decks might be worth $15.00 or $20.00. Regardless of the price you set, you receive the same percentage of revenues. You are paid for what your work sells. Payments are disbursed monthly to each author for total sales for that month minus our percentage of 25% through our Paypal account. If you do not have Paypal, we will soon offer other electronic methods so not to worry. Above all, we do not want to cheat anyone here, and frankly we hope we make all of our writers a great secondary income.
